Elbfest Hamburg celebrates port city’s maritime heritage
View and experience ships of yesteryear, port facilities, museums and institutions
Beautifully restored ships, top-quality culinary delights and atmospheric artistic contributions will feature at the second Elbfest.Hamburg from September 22-23, 2018 at Sandtorhafen in HafenCity, the Port Museum, the Oevelgönne Port Museum and of course on the Elbe. The Maritime Foundation is hosting the festival, supported by eleven other bodies such as Oevelgönne Port Museum and the Hamburg Historical Museums Foundation.
Multi-facetted events
Sandtorhafen in Hamburg’s HafenCity is the main venue and will host concerts and performances on Saturday and Sunday. Guided tours and interactive events will be offered on the ships and on the pontoon. Information stands, food and drink outlets and traders will provide a varied range of services. There will be Elbe boat trips on ships of the past as well as events in the Port Museum at the 1950’s warehouses and in the Oevelgönne Museum Port.
Highlight on Sunday
A sail-past of old ships will be held at the highlight and closing ceremony on the Elbe on Sunday afternoon. Old sailing ships, schooners, steamers and lighters will be at the focus. Some 50 ships from the Maritime Foundation, the Oevelgönne Port Museum and guests will be on hand.The Elbfest Hamburg is the central event of the Hamburg cultural network Maritime Hamburg with its 12 components Altona Museum, Ballinstadt, Cap San Diego, German Customs Museum, Hamburg Port Museum, International Maritime Museum, Oevelgönne Port Museum, Hamburg Historical Museum, Rickmer Rickmers, Warehouse District Museum, Spicy’s Spice Museum und the Hamburg Maritime Foundation.
